If the Facts Don’t Fit the Theory, Change the Facts
Sep 19, 2025Albert Einstein once said, “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” But what does that really mean?
Change. That scary word.
Most of us resist it. We think:
-
“I don’t want to change.”
-
“Why should I change? Why can’t others change instead?”
-
“If I change, I’ll be uncomfortable. What if it doesn’t work?”
The truth? Change is inevitable. It is as natural as the rising sun. But here’s where we get stuck—we want the world around us to change while we stay the same. We expect different results without altering our actions.
The Reality of Change: It Starts With You
Imagine trying to convince someone that your perspective is the “right” one. You explain, you argue, you push… but they just won’t see it. Frustrating, right?
Now, pause. Why do you need them to change?
Why not look within? Why not shift your approach instead of demanding change from others?
This is where Einstein’s words become powerful:
-
The theory represents the outcome you desire.
-
The facts are the actions leading to that outcome.
-
If the outcome isn’t what you want, change the facts—change your actions.
Cause and Effect: The Key to Personal Power
Every action creates a result. If you dislike the result, change the action.
It’s simple. But we complicate it by blaming external circumstances instead of adjusting our approach.
Instead of thinking:
❌ “They need to change.”
Try:
✅ “How can I show up differently?”
Instead of:
❌ “This situation is unfair.”
Ask:
✅ “What can I do to shift my role in this situation?”
This isn’t about blaming yourself—it’s about empowering yourself.
A Simple Shift in Perspective
Next time you find yourself frustrated with someone or something, try this:
-
Pause. Take a breath and recognize your desire for change.
-
Identify the desired outcome. What’s the “theory” you want to fit?
-
Examine your current actions. Are they leading to that outcome?
-
Change one action. Test a new approach and observe how it shifts the results.
When we stop expecting the world to change for us and start shifting our own actions, we reclaim our power. We no longer wait for things to happen—we create the change we seek.
If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.
The question is—what will you change today?
